“I am Shahin. I was born and brought up in Dhaka. I studied in school till class 5. It’s been 4 years since I have started working in this garment factory. I worked as a helper the first two years and since then I have been working in screen printing section. I don’t find this work tiring. I have actually gotten used to it. I work in the regular shift from 8 in the morning till 5 PM. And if I work till 10 at night, it is considered as overtime. I work overtime. I earn a few bucks extra like this. In total, I get around 8000 to 10000 taka every month. A lot can be said about the place I work at. There is a lot of advantage to working here. For example, if someone is feeling ill during work, they can take the day off and go home without any fuss. We get a day off every Friday. They don’t scold us or charge a fine if we apply for a leave. But we do face some problems if we remain absent without notice. We get a week off every Eid besides Fridays.
We also keep ourselves entertained at work. For example, there is this person from Sylhet who recently joined us. We have a lot of fun with him. I really like the Sylheti accent. We also celebrate “Happy new year” at the factory. We enjoy those certain occasions. We sing, dance and eat! My days at work are passing with ease. Besides a lot of benefits, we are also trained about earthquake safety. I feel lucky to be working here.”
