“I used to work in a garment factory. After I took a break a few years ago, I have not been able to get back in this field. Landing a job has become a lot more competitive now and they don’t take workers without any formal education anymore. So now I work as a housemaid. My salary is only 2500 taka per month. It’s extremely difficult to live alone in this city with this little money. I am fortunate to have my sister by my side. I live with her. I was married a long a time back. My husband left me and got married to another girl in our village. I have been alone ever since. If I didn’t have my sister’s support, I could not have continued my life like this. She is no less than a blessing in my life.
Here, all our neighbours are from the same area. We live in harmony most of the time. However, sometimes it is not so peaceful. Sometimes people quarrel and bicker amongst each other but there is a kind of love in that as well.” – An employee at a garment factory
