“I have been working for almost 20-25 years now. I am the second among four daughters in our family. I had to start working early due to immense responsibility. I started working in the sewing department at the age of ten with a salary of only BDT 150. I do the same work in Columbia market now.
I have spent all my life working. Since we don’t have any brothers, the major responsibility of looking after my parents was on us. Some of my brother in laws have been very helpful, but we can only do so much with the little money that we make. Since I never got the chance to study, I wanted my children to receive a proper education. This is why I had to send them away to Barisal at my parents’ place when they were kids. Only a mother understands how hard it is to stay away from her children. I endured the pain in the hope of a better future for them.
Both my children are studying now. My son did take a break from his study recently. I had found a job for him but they did not pay on time. My son has finally decided to study again and I could not have been happier with his decision! My daughter is currently a second-year student of Bengali literature. My children studying and living up to our expectations is a reward on its own!”
